Improving existing systems for treating waste water is a high R&D priority for various companies in the
Netherlands.
Dannenberg hereby presents an innovative and practical membrane based system to treat
industrial waste water on a small to medium scale. Membrane filtration is used in the food and beverage
industry combined with UV disinfection, in the textile industry to replace coagulation and flocculation
processes,
In the paper industry combined with membrane bio reactors, in the poultry industry combined
with ozone disinfection and for oily waste water it is used in combination with ozone and UV treatment.
The filters can also be used however to clean beverages like fruit juice, beer and wine.
Microfiltration or MF works around 0.1 μm, ultrafiltration or UF around 0.01 μm, nano filtration or NF
around 0.001 μm and reversed osmosis or RO around 0.0001 μm. A micrometer or μm, usually called
micron, is 0.001mm.
Anything below 40 microns in size will be invisible to the naked human eye. RO
provides the most extreme filtration level and is the only process that can completely filter out salt and
metallic ions from water, but the small pore size means that pressures up to 60 or 70 bar are needed to
force filtration. RO levels are rarely required for industrial waste water.
Between MF,UF, NF and RO, UF is the most practical filter size for most industrial waste water. UF
removes suspended solids, colloids, proteins, bacteria, viruses, plastics, silica and endotoxins. It
produces water with very high purity and low silt density. The primary advantages of low-pressure UF
membrane processes are: no need for chemicals like coagulants, flocculants and disinfectants and also
no chemicals for pH adjustment. UF gives very constant filtration results in terms of particle and
microbial removal. A UF system is very environment friendly, extremely compact and very simple to
operate, automate and maintain.
To quantify the performance of the new Dannenberg system: it reduces the pH with an average full point,
reduces COD with about 97%, reduces TS with about 85% and reduces TDS with 100%. In addition
UF systems retain beneficial minerals that a reversed osmosis system will remove
The Dannenberg Duo UF Cleaner works with a filter pressure of minimum 5 bar and consists of 2
tubular filters equipped with a variable number of ceramic rods for capacities up to 20m3/hr. The
available filter sizes are 0.02 and 0.05 micron. The filter has an extremely long lifetime whereby the rods
do not need replacement, giving a high availability and very low operating costs. The system can be
positioned anywhere and needs only 3 m2 of space.
To remove large particles from the water before entering the UF ceramic filter a dual centrifuge system
can be integrated. This will prevent any blocking of the ceramic filter tubes, reduce backflush cleaning,
and reduce maintenance time. The first centrifuge will rotate with 1500rpm and the second one with
3000rpm. Both UF ceramic filter and dual centrifuge filter can also be used individually. We would be
pleased to assist you in improving the sustainability of your production process in a creative way.
